Planning for Items that Residential Moving Companies Won't Move

When you hire a professional moving company to help you relocate to your new home, there are some items that they won't move for you. Not all is lost because you can take them with you in your own vehicle to ensure they make it to your new home. There are some things, though, that you are advised not to move with for safety reasons or because they won't survive if they move. We are going to take a look at a few things that moving companies won't move.

Guns and Ammunition

This is obviously a safety reason that moving companies won't pack and move your firearms. So you will need to pack and move these yourself in your own vehicle. Depending on how far you are moving and through which states, you will need to research each state's local gun laws. This way, you won't accidentally break any gun laws traveling across state lines. If you have a large number of firearms and you feel uncomfortable traveling with them, you should look into any specialized shipping through a company that does handle firearms transportation.

Food and Perishable Items

It is strongly recommended that you do not travel with any food or items that could be spoiled during transport, especially on long-distance moves. Things like meat and dairy need to be kept refrigerated at all times, and if you are traveling great distances, they have the chance to spoil.

If you have a fire extinguisher that you keep in the kitchen, take it to a location that handles the proper disposal of fire extinguishers. Don't run the chance of it detonating during travels; when you reach your new home, simply purchase a new one. They are supposed to be replaced after a certain amount of time anyway.

Plants

Plants aren't exactly durable, and a move could damage them beyond saving. Ask your friends and family members if they have any interest in them. If not, create a posting and see if you can sell them o give them away. If you are dead set on taking them with you, however, research ways that you can keep them safe while traveling.

Cleaning Materials

Materials such as bleach or ammonia should be disposed of properly before your move. These are materials that moving companies won't allow you to pack on their moving trucks as well for fire and safety reasons. It is highly recommended that you don't travel with them either.

Patio and Garage Items

Any lawn care items that use gasoline and oil must be drained and emptied before transporting.

If you have a grill or other outdoor items that require a propane tank, disconnect the tank and find a proper way to dispose of it. Many outlets that sell propane will purchase it from you, and you can later buy a new tank when you arrive. Gardening materials such as fertilizer are extremely flammable when it comes in contact with certain materials. It is highly recommended that you don't travel with any type of fertilizer.
